That Deep Green

A MAGNIFICENT MARRIAGE BETWEEN NATURE AND ARCHITECTURE. Josep Fontserè's L'Umbracle in Parc de la Ciutadella was built in 1883 as part of the 1888 Exposición Universal de Barcelona. Book-ended by brick walls serving as front and rear facades, it is best identified by the wooden slats running along the entire length of the structure in arched paths.

Inside, slender columns jut through tropical foliage, enjoying a rainforest-like environment simulated by the light-sifting slats. An oval pathway allows for strolling and Modernisme benches encourage peaceful, contemplative breaks.

Deep breaths and deep thoughts, amidst the deep green. Great way to spend a Sunday.
